Our Founders

Gene and Gretchen Tate lead the faith based, non profit, charitable organization Living Seeds Initiative.  Founded in 2008, Living Seeds Initiative is dedicated to enlighten, equip and empower the church and surrounding communities to engage in the complex issues of hunger, poverty and natural resource stewardship through Biblically based Agriculture and Development training.

Beginning their missions journey with their young family in 1986, this twenty-plus year journey, serving with Youth With A Mission, Mercy Ships and now as founders of Living Seeds Initiative, has led them to minister, teach, disciple and encourage a diverse range of audiences around the world.  From refugee resettlement communities and village peasant farmers to aspiring missionaries and college students, their heart is to be a part of helping people discover God’s design, purposes, and intentions for His Kingdom to come and His will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

Natives of southwestern and south central Colorado, Gene and Gretchen's roots and heritage are in pioneer Colorado ranching families.  They met and married while attending Colorado State University and following graduation pursued  a livelihood in production agriculture on Gene’s family’s ranch in Cimarron Colorado, raising sheep and cattle and starting their own family.

A short term commitment to missions In June of 1986 turned into a full time and life long journey.  They trained and served with YWAM Colorado at Cimarron and after a short season working in production agriculture in Central and West Texas, returned to YWAM Colorado at Cimarron to lead their Discipleship Training Schools.

Transferring to Mercy Ships Texas based International Operations Center (IOC) in 1993, they began working with the Foundations in Community Development School (FCD) missions training program.

Exposed to the Biblical foundations and principles of people centered transformational development, they discovered a renewed value to their heritage, restored value to their life’s interests, and a passion and conviction to practice and multiply people centered development.  A highlight during this season was serving as a family to South Africa in 1995 helping pioneer the FCD school with YWAM in Muizenberg.  Upon return, Gene led and directed the 1996 FCD school at the IOC with class participants spanning 10 nations.

With vision for a more purposed effort for Agriculture development, Gene accepted with Gretchen at his side, the leadership of Mercy Ships then newly formed Agriculture Department.  Gene served the next ten years developing the organizations agriculture program, traveling internationally and leading a dedicated staff serving both stateside and abroad.

Their missions call and life experience led to the vision and transition to found Living Seeds Initiative in February 2008.

Gene and Gretchen enjoyed the privilege, challenge and opportunity to have raised their family in missions.  Now all married, Eric, Genae and Evan and their respective spouses Cari, Stefan and Madison continue to be an important part of their parents life and ministry with their encouragements and contributions of time, resources, thoughts, vocational giftings, and networking.  Gene and Gretchen are blessed with eight grandchildren who provide much joy in their lives.
